Xiaomi 17 Ultra Review
MobilesDive Staff · 10/24/2026
The best camera phone of 2026: a 1-inch Leica main sensor, a continuous-zoom 200MP telephoto and a 19-hour battery.
Welcome to another MobilesDive review! The Xiaomi 17 Ultra promises to be the camera phone to beat in 2026, with a huge 1-inch main sensor, a 200MP zoom lens that moves, a giant 6,000mAh battery and Leica color science. After spending time with the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, here's everything you need to know.
Design & Build Quality
The 17 Ultra looks and feels like a proper flagship camera phone. The big round camera island on the back makes no secret of what this phone is for, and the Leica branding gives it a premium, almost camera-like character. At 8.3mm thick and around 218 grams it is a substantial phone, but the weight is balanced well and it feels solid rather than clumsy.
Build quality is excellent, with a glass front, an aluminum frame and a fiber-reinforced plastic or eco-leather back depending on the color. The phone is rated IP68 and even IP69, so it handles dust, immersion and high-pressure water jets better than most rivals. The Starlit Green finish is the pick of the three colors, and the whole package feels like something that costs every bit of its price.
Design & Build Quality Score: 9/10
Display
The 6.9-inch LTPO AMOLED display is bright, smooth and colorful. It supports Dolby Vision, HDR Vivid and HDR10+, runs at 120Hz, and peaks at 3,500 nits for HDR content. The 2160Hz PWM dimming is also a welcome touch, because it makes the screen easier on the eyes at low brightness than many rivals.
There is one honest caveat: in normal, non-HDR use, lab testing measured 639 nits by hand and 1,132 nits automatically, which is actually lower than the previous 15 Ultra managed. In practice the screen still looks great and stays readable outdoors, but the headline brightness number flatters it a little.

Display Score: 9/10
Performance
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is a monster of a chip, and the 17 Ultra gets everything out of it. Benchmarks land near the top of the charts, with AnTuTu scores around 3.86 million and Geekbench 6 scores close to 10,900, and in real use the phone never stutters, no matter how heavy the game or how many apps are open. The 16GB of RAM in our review unit means multitasking is effortless.
This is a phone that will stay fast for years, and Xiaomi's update commitment should keep it current. If raw speed is your priority, there is nothing better on Android right now.
Performance Score: 9.5/10
Camera System
This is why you buy the 17 Ultra. The 50MP main camera uses a large 1-inch type sensor, and it takes superb photos with natural detail, wide dynamic range and the kind of depth that smaller sensors cannot fake. Leica's two color modes, Authentic and Vibrant, let you choose between a more contrasty, classic look and a punchier, more saturated one, and both look great.
Zoom Performance
The star of the show is the 200MP periscope lens, which uses a moving zoom mechanism to offer continuous optical zoom from 3.2x to 4.3x. That means you can frame a shot at any point in that range without losing quality, and the huge sensor handles further digital cropping very well. Zoomed shots stay sharp and detailed far beyond where most phones fall apart, and this is the best zoom system we have tested on a phone this year.
Video Recording
Video is equally strong, with 8K recording, 4K at up to 120 frames per second, and Dolby Vision HDR video. Footage looks stable, detailed and cinematic, and the zoom lens holds up impressively well in video too.
Selfie Camera
The 50MP front camera with autofocus is a big upgrade over the last generation. Selfies are sharp and detailed, and 4K60 video makes it a strong choice for creators.
Camera System Score: 9.5/10
Battery Life
The global 17 Ultra packs a 6,000mAh silicon-carbon battery, which is smaller than the 6,800mAh cell in the Chinese model but still a big upgrade over the 5,410mAh battery in last year's 15 Ultra. In lab testing it delivered 19 hours and 9 minutes of active use, which comfortably covers a heavy day and often stretches into a second day with lighter use.
Charging is fast at 90W wired, with 50W wireless and reverse charging for accessories. The only frustration is the box: in Europe, Xiaomi no longer includes a charger, so you get a cable and a case and need your own brick to hit those top speeds.

Battery Life Score: 9/10
Software Experience
HyperOS 3 on Android 16 is Xiaomi's best software yet, and the 17 Ultra is the first flagship to ship it globally. The interface is smooth and fast, animations are polished, and there are genuinely useful features for photographers, including deep Leica integration and a proper manual mode.
- HyperOS 3 with Leica Authentic and Vibrant color modes
- Full manual camera controls and pro video options
- Improved animations and smoother multitasking
- Infrared port, NFC and two-way satellite communication
That said, HyperOS still has its quirks. Some settings are buried in odd places, a few pre-installed apps feel unnecessary, and the software experience is not quite as clean as Samsung's or Google's. It is good, and getting better, but it is still the phone's weakest area.
Software Experience Score: 8.5/10
Pros
- Best phone zoom system available, with continuous optical zoom
- Superb 1-inch main camera with Leica color science
- Excellent 19-hour active-use battery life
- Fast 90W wired and 50W wireless charging
- Bright Dolby Vision display with eye-friendly dimming
Cons
- No charger included in the box in Europe
- Standard screen brightness lower than the previous model
- Global battery smaller than the Chinese version's 6,800mAh
- HyperOS still has quirks and bloat
- Premium price, and the phone is big and heavy
Final Verdict: Should You Buy It?
The Xiaomi 17 Ultra is the best camera phone of 2026 for anyone who cares about photography. The combination of the 1-inch main sensor and the continuous zoom lens is genuinely special, and it is backed by top-tier performance, a big battery and a great display. If the camera is your top priority, nothing else comes close.
It is not perfect: the software still needs polish, the box lacks a charger, and it is a big, expensive phone. But for photographers and power users, the 17 Ultra is easy to recommend.
