iPhone 18 Pro Max Review

MobilesDive Staff · 10/22/2026

iPhone 18 Pro Max brings the blazing-fast A20 Pro chip, a variable aperture camera system and the best battery life ever in an iPhone.

Welcome to another MobilesDive review! If you have been wondering whether Apple's biggest and most expensive iPhone is worth the upgrade this year, you are in the right place.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max arrives with a brand-new A20 Pro chip, a main camera that can physically change its aperture, a smaller Dynamic Island and the largest battery Apple has ever put in an iPhone. On paper, it sounds like a major leap. In daily use, it feels more like a careful refinement of an already excellent phone.

After spending time with the iPhone 18 Pro Max, here is everything you need to know.

Design & Build Quality: Premium, Familiar and Heavy

The moment you pick up the iPhone 18 Pro Max, it feels dense and expensive in the best possible way.

Apple has kept the wide camera plateau design and refined it with an aluminum unibody frame and a color-matched Ceramic Shield back. The finish looks cleaner than before, and the new Burgundy color gives the phone a rich, deep look, joined by Black, Silver and Glacier options.

Build quality is beyond question. The Ceramic Shield 2 glass on both sides, the IP68 rating for up to 6 meters of water, and the tight, creak-free construction make this feel like a phone built to last for years.

The trade-off is weight. At 249 grams, this is the heaviest Pro Max Apple has ever made, thanks to the bigger battery and cooling system. You feel it in one-handed use and in a trouser pocket, and it is the one design compromise you cannot ignore.

Design Score: 9/10

Display: Bright, Sharp and Beautifully Tuned

Apple has used its excellent 6.9-inch LTPO Super Retina XDR OLED panel again, and it remains one of the finest screens on any phone.

The 2868 x 1320 resolution keeps everything pin-sharp at 460 ppi, ProMotion adapts smoothly between 1Hz and 120Hz, and Dolby Vision content looks superb. The Dynamic Island is now 35% smaller thanks to an under-screen IR camera, which gives video and games a slightly cleaner look.

Brightness is strong, reaching up to 3,000 nits outdoors in short bursts, so the screen stays readable in harsh sunlight. Minimum brightness drops to just 1 nit, which is kind to your eyes at night.

Compared to Competitors

Against the Galaxy S26 Ultra, the iPhone's panel is a touch lower in resolution and lacks Samsung's anti-reflective Privacy Display tricks. In real-world viewing, though, both are superb, and Apple's color tuning remains the benchmark for accuracy.

Display Score: 9.5/10

Performance: A20 Pro Is Seriously Fast

Inside the iPhone 18 Pro Max sits Apple's new A20 Pro chip, built on a 2nm process with a redesigned package that connects the silicon directly to a much larger vapor chamber.

In daily use, everything is instant. Apps open the moment you tap them, heavy multitasking never stutters, and the phone stays noticeably cooler than last year's model during long sessions.

Gamers are well covered. Demanding titles run at high settings with stable frame rates, and the improved cooling means performance holds up instead of dropping after a few minutes. With 12GB of RAM and up to 50% more memory bandwidth, this chip is built to stay fast for years.

Honestly, for everyday tasks you will not feel a dramatic difference over the A19 Pro. The A20 Pro's real advantage is headroom: heavier AI features and bigger games in the coming years will use it first.

Performance Score: 9.5/10

Camera System: The Variable Aperture Party Trick

The camera hardware is where Apple made its boldest change this year.

All three rear cameras are 48MP Fusion units, but the main camera now has a real variable aperture. Its six-blade lens can open up to f/1.48 for low light or stop down to f/4.0 for deeper focus in group shots, and new Pro controls let you adjust it manually along with shutter speed.

In practice, photos are excellent: natural colors, superb dynamic range and reliable detail in almost any light. The wider aperture does help at night, though most users will leave it on automatic and simply enjoy the results.

Zoom Performance

The 48MP telephoto offers 4x optical zoom at 100mm and optical-quality results up to 8x (200mm). Shots stay clean and detailed well beyond what most rival phones manage, making this a great camera for travel and events.

Video Recording

Video remains Apple's home ground. You get 4K Dolby Vision at up to 120fps, ProRes and ProRes RAW recording, Apple Log 2 and even Genlock support for professional multi-camera work. Footage is stable, detailed and ready to publish straight from the phone.

Selfie Camera

The 18MP Center Stage front camera keeps you framed during calls and captures sharp, natural-looking selfies. It is unchanged from last year, but it did not need changing.

Camera Score: 9.5/10

Battery Life: The Best Ever on an iPhone

Battery life is the upgrade you will feel every single day.

The larger cell, up to 5,567mAh on the eSIM model, works with the efficient A20 Pro to deliver endurance that finally matches the best Android flagships. In independent testing, the phone posted an active use score of over 19 hours, and Apple rates it for up to 45 hours of video playback.

Charging has finally caught up too. A 50% top-up takes around 15 minutes with a suitable adapter, and a full charge takes about an hour. MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging reach 25W, which is convenient, though still slower than the wired option.

Compared to Competitors

The iPhone 18 Pro Max comfortably outlasts the Galaxy S26 Ultra in mixed use. Some Chinese flagships with silicon-carbon batteries still charge faster, but for pure endurance, this iPhone is now at the front of the pack.

Battery Score: 9.5/10

Software Experience: iOS 27 and the New Siri AI

The iPhone 18 Pro Max launches with iOS 27, and the headline act is the new Siri AI.

The assistant now understands personal context far better, works across more third-party apps and keeps past conversations in its own app. Apple Intelligence features feel genuinely useful rather than decorative, though Siri AI is launching in beta and is not available in the EU and China at first.

Useful features include:

  • New Siri AI with personal context
  • Apple Intelligence writing and image tools
  • Live translation across calls and messages
  • Camera Control with Pro camera settings
  • Long-term iOS updates for years to come

The interface itself remains smooth, familiar and polished, exactly as iPhone users expect.

Software Score: 9/10

Pros

  • Class-leading battery life
  • Extremely fast A20 Pro chip with better cooling
  • Excellent cameras with a real variable aperture
  • Superb 6.9-inch OLED display with a smaller Dynamic Island
  • Best-in-class video recording
  • Premium build with IP68 protection
  • Much faster wired charging than before

Cons

  • Very heavy at 249 grams
  • Premium price starting at $1,299

Final Verdict: Should You Buy It?

The iPhone 18 Pro Max does not reinvent the iPhone, but it improves almost everything that matters in daily life: battery life, charging speed, cooling, cameras and display refinement.

If you are coming from an iPhone 15 Pro Max or anything older, this is an easy recommendation and one of the best smartphones you can buy today. If you already own the 17 Pro Max, the changes are real but incremental, and you can safely wait for next year's anniversary model.
